Teach Kids Math, Not Finance
This Week on The Compound
On this crossover edition of Jill on Money, Jill Schlesinger talks with Josh and Michael about training to run a 5k, investing during moments of crisis, and why financial literacy education for young people is overrated.
OUTSIDE THE COMPOUND
Why do some people play the lottery or take a flyer on some altcoin? On the face of it doesn’t make any financial sense. Nick Maggiulli at Of Dollars and Data takes a closer look.
You can see why some people make seemingly “bad” financial decisions. Because it’s either one of their few joys in life or one of the easiest ways for them to get ahead financially. This explains why financial nihilism has taken off across the U.S. When the cost of living is rising and you feel like you can’t get ahead, sports betting, crypto, and lottery tickets don’t seem like such bad ideas.
FRIENDS OF THE COMPOUND
Prior TCAF guest Sam Ro at TKer reminds us that an ‘average year’ in the stock market is a rarity.
It’s fair to expect average annual returns over the lifetime of your investment in the stock market.
But don’t expect average returns for each individual year. That would set you up to be overly disappointed in below-average years, and perhaps overly worried about froth in above-average years.
Best to be mindful of the fact that average returns are only realized after combining multiple years of performance, which will include some below-average years and above-average years.
THE COMPOUND IS COMING TO LA!
The Compound and Friends will be in Los Angeles on Tuesday and you could be part of the audience. Join Josh, Michael, and their special guests Doug Ellin, creator of the hit HBO show Entourage, and Matt Belloni of Puck News and host of The Town. This is your last chance for tickets so don’t miss out.
COMING SOON
In addition to their LA trip this week, Josh and Michael will also be speaking with Jeff deGraaf, Chairman and CIO, at Rennaisance Macro Research.
