CHART OF THE WEEK
Both Josh and Michael referenced the above chart this week. Assume for a minute we do go into a recession, historically the stock market bottoms well before the economy and corporate earnings. This is why jumping in and out of the market is so fraught. Josh writes:
This is why you don’t wait to get invested or attempt to sit out the economic or earnings downturns. It’s a flawed idea, costing you both potential returns and your sanity. No one can do it reliably and most of the time you’ll be late in both directions - the sell and the buy. Do not try this at home.
OUTSIDE THE COMPOUND
During periods of unprecedented economic and market volatility, it’s easy to get off track. Prior Compound guest, Jared Dillian, writing in his newsletter, notes the importance of humility when it comes to the market. He writes:
You have to remain humble in the markets, because karma has everyone’s address. I’m sure most people have had the experience of having a good run trading. The seeds of the bad run are sown in the good run. You start thinking you are a genius, you start taking too much risk, and incomprehensible demoralization is the result. If your friends and family can’t bring you back to earth, the market will do it for you.
