This Week on The Compound

This week Callie Cox joined Michael on a new episode of WAYT. They discussed the prospects for a recession, a change in market sentiment, the state of the American consumer, and how to use analyst buy ratings. (Listen)

INSIDE THE COMPOUND

2022 was an anomaly. Both the stock and bond markets had double-digit negative returns. Ben Carlson at A Wealth of Common Sense looks at the historical record of what happens in the bond market when stocks decline. He writes:

Stocks and bonds both finished the year with gains simultaneously nearly 60% of the time. Bonds finished the year higher than stocks 36% of all years.

FRIENDS OF THE COMPOUND

In the last few years, we have seen a growing number of ways to bet and/or speculate. This includes crypto, legal sports gambling, all manner of leveraged ETFs, and last but not least, 0DTE options. In short, there have never been more ways to blow up your financial life. Unfortunately, no one is looking out for your financial life but yourself. As Tadas Viskanta at Abnormal Returns writes:

The odds are stacked against anyone trying to make their fortunes betting on sports or trading 0DTE options or leveraged single stock ETFs. As Seth Godin writes, “Someone is going to win the lottery, but it probably won’t be us.” All you can do is look out for yourself.

MERCH

Summer is rapidly coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use a one-of-a-kind finance-themed Hawaiian shirt. It is a collab between The Compound and Tropical Bros. The best thing is that 10% of all sales will be donated to No Kid Hungry. For a limited time, you can also use the promo code Labor25 to get an additional discount.

COMING SOON

Next week on TCAF, Josh and Michael will be joined by Talmon Smith of the New York Times and our very own Ben Carlson.
